Two Ears

Most of us have two ears and only one mouth. That might be a hint as to the proportion each ought to be used. ;-) I value learning and I know I don't learn nearly as much when I'm talking. In theory at least, I already know the stuff I talk about... At our wedding my father in law said, "Mike is a good listener." That comment was followed by howls of laughter, which will make sense if you know She Who Must be Obeyed. In addition to being a key for our marriage, listening is also an important part of being a Male Ally. HBR has a great article that describes more ways men can become better allies .

Left-handed Pencils

My parents, like most I assume, would ask us every year what we wanted for Christmas. One year my brother replied, "Left-handed pencils." I thought that was weird. Pencils don't care about your "handedness". They work the same whether you are left-handed or right-handed. Or so I thought. My parents, being who they are, were more open minded. They asked for him to explain. He took a pencil and demonstrated it to us.  First, what it looks like to a right-hander: Then what it looks like to a left-hander: There's no trick photography here. Try it for yourself. My parents somehow found left-handed pencils for him for Christmas. And this was long before Amazon or the Internet.
